WHAT IS OPENSTUDIO?
OPENSTUDIO is web + art + community + economics. It is an open ended experiment that couples a very simple drawing tool with an economy of artists, curators, collectors, dealers and viewers. Members can create and modify drawings, set prices and licenses, exchange and exhibit work, view financial records, and commission one another. Because OPENSTUDIO is experimental, we continually add features and take others away. We know that the system is not perfect, but it was never meant to be. Please enjoy it as it is with its quirks.
CURRENCY
The foundation of our online economy is the "Burak" currency (named after the trustworthy Burak himself). You can earn Buraks by selling your artwork.
TOOLS
Draw Alpha is the first of many tools to be released. A number of other applications are in development: Photo, Haiku, Mini, Chronicler, Spreadsheet and others ...
WHERE DO MY DOCUMENTS GO?
Everything you make and save to in the OPENSTUDIO system is stored and backed up on our servers, so that you can access and edit your creations from anywhere in the world as long as you can access the web.
WHY?
OPENSTUDIO breaks free of the shackles of the tired gallery/patron model representative of the classic schmism between the creative and the lucrative. It is a declaration of the new post digital ideals: transparency, community, and cooperation, yet grounded in economic reality.
The lone artist is powerless against the old model. OPENSTUDIO is an assertion that through collaborative effort, creativity and intelligence can bring about positive change in our world.
OPENSTUDIO aims to plant the seed of these ideals, potentiating a shift towards new understanding of the value of creativity. If these ideas take root, if we can cultivate a community of creators, if we can provide the means for collaboration, and if we can expand the role of creativity in the realms of ethics, politics and business, then we all win.
